A planeload of holidaymakers flying to the USA is causing as much environmental damage as the average UK motorist does in one year, campaigners say.
Figures from Friends of the Earth show that a plane making the journey to Florida and back produces as much carbon dioxide as a car does during a whole year.
And it says some tourist destinations, like the Maldives in the Indian Ocean, could eventually be swamped by rising sea levels if concerns about pollution are not heeded now.
""People may not know that flying is so polluting,"" said FoE aviation campaigner Simon McRae.
""It's not that car travel is particularly fuel efficient. It's just that flying burns up so much fuel and pollutes even more.""
'Take the train'
With the number of people flying expected to double in the next 15 years, the campaigners are urging people to consider taking holidays closer to home to avoid adding to greenhouse gases.
It also suggests environmentally-conscious passengers should take trains instead of short flights.
The report says the world's 16,000 commercial jet aircraft produce more than 600 million tonnes of carbon dioxide every year.
And it says that, because airlines pay no tax on the fuel they use, they do have sufficient incentive to conserve or increase passenger loadings.
The report was also from the Aviation Environment Federation, the National Society for Clean Air and Environment Protection and anti-noise group HACAN/Clear Skies.
Any Comments ???

I'm new to this forum, and I don't know whether this is the righr forum to post to, but I have a question about using laptops on 747s
I will be travelling on Singapore Airlines, and I read somewhere on the Internet
that there is a power socket near the emergency exit near the jump seats. I will be travelling on a 747-400, so does anybody know where or whether I will be able to plug a laptop power adaptor ? Besides running to the bathroom and plugging it in, of course..
Thanks !
P.S. : Singapore Airlines does not install laptop power ports in coach, unlike Canadian Airlines. Thanks to Canadian for having installed this in coach - they even provided the adaptor for the duration of the trip !

Does anyone know who the major prop makers are and where can I find information about them? I'd also like to know if they make either variable pitch or constant speed propellers.
Thank you,
Nils

With modern airliners, do the pilots select the A/P altitude hold for climbing to altitude while on the ground at V1? Or do they select it after take off and at a certain altitude...like 400 feet off the ground or something.
Or do pilots select the V/S hold until they reach altitude?
Which ever option they select for their climb, when do they select it ?
Blah. I can't seem to explain my question clearly. Sorry about that.
Any help will be great

Is there any way to find out about major airports' airline radio frequencies through the internet? Is there any web site providing that information?
Thanks in advance for any answer.

I am wondering if anyother GyroCopter flyers out there have knoticed
a tennancy for the craft to make a left turn when the landing gear leaves the ground ?
I remember reading an artical about a fell'a getting his Gyro instruction lessons and he mentioned this tennancy ... that if he hadn't been forwarned about it it could have been desasterous on his first flight.
Anyone have that problem with their Autogyro ?... i am courious as to why it happens.... is it shaired with all Autogyro craft or just the Ultralights or what ?
I have knoticed this tennancy in my Gyrocopter ...thats why i ask !
maybe something isn't adjusted just right ?
